Two trains derailed while
crossing a flood-hit bridge in India, leaving 12 people dead.
The trains derailed just minutes after each other,
with West Central Railway spokesman Piyush
Mathur saying
that many had been rescued.
“There are 12 casualties,” Mathur told the CNN-IBN
network, but added that the death toll could still rise.
One of trains, which was coming from Mumbai, was hit
by a sudden surge of water, which led to the derailment of some of its
carriages.
The other train, travelling in the opposite direction,
was hit in the engine and first 3 carriages.
“There is some suggestion of flash floods on the
tracks that caved the tracks. Most of the coaches had passed but the last few
carriages were derailed,” railway ministry spokesman Anil
Saxena told the
network of the first train.
“The entire area has been reeling under heavy rainfall
for the last few days. The roads are badly damaged, even the access road,”
Saxena said.
