Indian
temple stampede leaves 11 dead
11
people have been reported dead after a stampede at a temple in India.
Dozens more were injured in the
incident, which occurred during a Hindu festival on Monday morning.
The stampede occurred when thousands
of people tried to force their way into the temple when its gates opened.
According to police officer Subodh Kumar, 8 women were among the dead, with 24
injured people being treated at a local hospital.
The people were participating in a
month-long festival at the temple of Shiva, the destroyer, one of the main
deities of Hinduism.
The incident is fairly common in
Indian religious festivals, with 27 people dying during a stampede at
a Hindu religious bathing festival in July.
