Manchester United were
unconvincing in their first league game as Van Gaal handed starts to four of
his five new signings and played the other later but it was a Kyle Walker own
goal that won the game for Manchester United.
Schneiderlin, Darmian, Memphis Depay and Sergio Romero
all started for Manchester United but struggled to impact the game as Tottenham
controlled the early going. Manchester United struggled until the 22nd minute when Memphis Depay ran behind
the Tottenham backline before squaring the ball to Rooney who loosely
controlled the ball allowing Walker to tackle him and accidentally knock the
ball into the net. Manchester United continued to grow into the game but
neither side really showed moments of quality. Schweinsteiger was handed his
Old Trafford debut in the 61st minute, coming on for Michael Carrick
and Manchester United showed great defensive determination to keep Spurs out in
the final 15 minutes.
Manchester United would be happy with the win but
disappointed in the manner in which it came while Tottenham would take a few
positives away from the game.
