Branislav Ivanovic was axed from the Chelsea team that played against Maccabi Tel Aviv yesterday but the worst might be yet to come for the Serbian defender.
According to reports, Jose Mourinho has instructed his scouts to begin searching for strong right full backs who can slot in immediately in the Chelsea first team. In essence, Mourinho is looking to replace Branislav Ivanovic.
Chelsea had offered Ivanovic a one year extension on his contract at the end of last season which would see his new contract run out at the end of this season but the Serbian started this season very badly and failed to improve over the last five games forcing Mourinho to move Cesar Azpillicueta to the position Ivanovic normally occupies. Ivanovic has been one of the most consistent performers for Chelsea in the last five seasons but his recent form is a genuine cause for concern and Mourinho is obviously concerned.
Chelsea would play Arsenal on Saturday in the Premier league and Ivanovic’s involvement in the match is still up for debate. Mourinho might just be resting Ivanovic as the player looks jaded. We will however know in a few weeks if it is just a remedy to fatigue or if Ivanovic’s Chelsea number is up.
