The University of Ibadan has
appointed Professor Idowu Olayinka as the new Vice Chancellor, as he succeeds
Professor Isaac Adewole, whose tenure will end on November 30.
Delivering the announcement at the school’s Senate
Chamber on Wednesday, Pro-Chancellor of the university, Dr. Umar Mustapha, said
the choice of Olayinka was unanimous after three candidates were recommended by
the selection committee from the six candidates that were shortlisted for the
position.
He said, “Out
of the six candidates, three candidates were later recommended after screening
and interview. They were all rated based on the performance of the candidates.
“The
process was open and credible. Prof. Olayinka will resume on December 1, 2015.
Before then, he will understudy the current VC. I thank the outgoing VC for the
wonderful job he did in the university.
“He
took the university to greater heights. UI is today is ranked one of the best
in Africa. We have the best Distance Learning Centre in Nigeria. Today, UI is
locally relevant, nationally prominent and globally competitive. The new VC has
more than 20 years of experience in the university and he understands the
administration of the institution.”
The professor of geology, 57, is the first VC of the
school to emerge from the Faculty of Science since the school was established
in 1948.
