Al-Sadd midfielder, Xavi
Hernandez has revealed that he did not join Bayern Munich because Pep Guardiola
asked him not to.
Xavi Hernandez was at his prime around 2008 and was
the key player for Spain and Barcelona at the age of 28 and Bayern Munich were
set to make a move for the midfielder. Xavi revealed that he came close to
leaving Barcelona and joining Bayern Munich but the arrival of Guardiola
stopped him from moving to the German giants.
“I spoke with my agent, Ivan
Corretja, and he told me there was an offer from Bayern. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge
wanted me.”Xavi revealed in a recent interview. “But then Pep Guardiola
became the new coach at Barcelona and I played a great Euro 2008. Pep told me
that I was not going anywhere and explained how he could not imagine a
Barcelona without me. I was captivated by what he said.” Xavi decided to stay
on as a player at Barcelona and became one of the greatest players to play for
the club, winning multiple trophies with the Spanish giants before moving on to
Al-Sadd after captaining the side to the treble last season.
Guardiola’s move to Bayern must have been awkward
after convincing Xavi not to join the club, Guardiola himself departed Bayern
and the one year later, joined Bayern Munich
