Over 65 Killed, Kids Burnt Alive As Boko Haram Raids Borno Village
Not less than 65 persons were
reported slaughtered as the Nigerian troops engaged militants suspected to be
members of Boko Haram sect in a fierce gun battle in Saturday night’s attack on
Dalori, a village bordering Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
The battle which lasted for hours
on Saturday, January 30, left scores of charred corpses and bodies with bullet
wounds littering Dalori village, which is about 5 kilometers from Maiduguri,
the birthplace of Boko Haram and the biggest city in the northeast, according
to survivors and soldiers.
A survivor hidden in a tree says he watched Boko Haram
extremists firebomb huts and heard the screams of children among people burned
to death in the attack, AP reports.
It was learnt that the insurgents attacked Dalori and
Walori villages, around 7pm on Saturday night.
It was gathered that the Boko Haram insurgents, who
usually mounted surprise attacks at that hour of the day had studied the
movement of the military, as they came in Hilux vans and motorcycles, dressed
in army camouflages and then operating unhindered, setting ablaze houses in the
village.
The military confirmed the attack on Dalori village
but were silent on the number of casualties.
However, a member of the youth vigilance group in the
village, who pleaded anonymity, on Sunday, disclosed that not less than 65
persons were killed with over 100 others injured in the attack.
Boko Haram has taken to attacking soft targets,
increasingly with suicide bombers, since the military last year drove them out
of towns and villages in north-eastern Nigeria.
