Germany on Wednesday defeated Nigeria 2-0 in the semi-finals
of the Olympic football event, ending the country’s hope of a repeat of their
1996 feat at the games.
The Germans grabbed their first
goal in the 9th minute when a Serge Gnabry’s clever pass into the box fooled
the Nigerian defence for Max Meyer to latch on to.The 20-year-old Schalke 04 attacking midfielder squared the ball for Lukas Klostermann to apply the finish with just a tap-in.
Substitute Niels Petersen grabbed the second goal in the 88th minute to seal victory for the Germans.
Nigeria will now battle Honduras for a Bronze medal.
