defeat Sevilla 3-2 in the UEFA Super Cup in Norway on Tuesday.
Marco Asensio scored a spectacular opener for Real Madrid, but the Europa League champions struck back though Franco Vazquez before the break and Yevhen Konoplyanka's second-half penalty.
But Sergio Ramos made up for conceding that
spot-kick by heading home in stoppage time, and after Sevilla went down to 10
men at the start of extra time, Carvajal found the winner in the 119th minute.Marco Asensio scored a spectacular opener for Real Madrid, but the Europa League champions struck back though Franco Vazquez before the break and Yevhen Konoplyanka's second-half penalty.
Asensio opened the scoring in the 21st minute when he received the ball 30 yards from goal, took a touch, picked his spot and fired into the top corner.
Sevilla nearly equalised 10 minutes later with Daniel Carrico's shot from distance, but Real keeper Kiko Casilla got down to save.
However, Sevilla were back level four minutes before half-time when Vitolo brought a cross down on his chest at the top of the box, and Vazquez picked it up and shot past Casilla.
Ramos conceded a penalty in the 70th minute when Vitolo cut behind him and the defender stuck out a leg. Konoplyanka sent Casilla the wrong way and Sevilla were ahead.
Real Madrid, playing without stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, brought on Karim Benzema in pursuit of an equaliser and finally found it in stoppage time.
Lucas Vazquez's cross found Ramos alone in the centre of the box and he could not miss with a header from four yards out.
As the game went to extra time, defender Timothee Kolodziejczak picked up two yellow cards in quick succession, leaving Sevilla with 10 men.
Ramos thought he had given Real the lead in the 99th minute, but after consulting with the extra official behind the goal, Serbian referee Milorad Mazic ruled the header out for a foul.
The man advantage led to a one-sided finish to the game, but Sevilla resisted the Madrid attack until Carvajal cut through the defence to deliver the winner from 12 yards.
