Real Madrid got their UEFA champions league campaign off to a flyer
as Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 80th champions
league goal amidst a wonderful hat-trick.
Real
Madrid were always in charge of the game but it took them 30 minutes to finally
get in front after the Shakhtar goalkeeper spilled the ball in the box,
allowing Benzema the simple task of firing the ball into the net. Five minutes
into the second half, Shakhtar got reduced to ten men as Taras Stepanenko got
sent off after receiving his second yellow card.
Real Madrid made their man
advantage count and in the 54th minute, Ronaldo got his first goal
firing home from the spot to make it 2-0. In the 63rd minute,
Ronaldo was on hand to bang in his second penalty, second goal of the match and
80th goal in the UEFA champions league and
the Portuguese rounded off the
scoring in the 81st minute to make it 4-0 with a superb
header from close range.
Real
Madrid were always in charge of the match and would be looking to build on this
victory in order to put together a run that can end in UEFA champions league
success.
Real
Madrid would however be very disappointed as Gareth Bale, Rafael Varane and
Sergio Ramos all picked up injuries in the clash. The injuries to Varane and
Sergio Ramos would throw Rafa Benitez’s side into a defensive crisis
