Serena Williams is still on
course to win her calendar grand slam (winning all four grand slams in a
calendar year) and not even her big sister, Venus Williams could stop her.
Serena Williams broke Venus early in the first set and
was able to run away with the set winning it 6-2. Venus however came back
strongly in the second set and was able to run into a 6-1 victory to set up a
final set after Serena had uncharacteristically made a lot of unforced errors
in the second set. In the third set, both Venus and Serena Williams sent in
some big serves but an early break by Serena allowed her to run away with the
match as Venus could hardly keep up with the power play of Serena despite all
her technical ability.
It was an emotional event for both sisters as their period
of dominance slowly comes to an end with both sisters entering the twilight of
their careers. Serena Williams is doing hers with a bang as she gets set to
play unseeded Roberta Vinci in the semifinals and would be looking to become
the first woman since Steffi Graffe to win all four major grand slams in one
calendar year in 1988
